New Year, New Music: January Highlights

Some of the best new releases from this month, compiled just for you, right here.

With so many great artists out there, it can be hard to keep up with all the new music that's being released. We've decided to make things a little easier for you by putting together a list of some of the best new music from artists you might not have heard of before. And starting now, at the end of each month we will be highlighting a bunch of different artists and their new releases (yay!). You can listen to all this wonderful music on a Spotify playlist by clicking here, but make sure to read about all the artists and their new music first!

1. Roman Lewis, ‘Heartbreak (for now)’ - January 25th

This London-based artist just released his debut EP at only 17 years old, which surprised me when I listened to it for the first time - I would've never guessed he is as young as he actually is. The mature and distinct sound of Lewis' music is what draws people to it. The EP, 'Heartbreak (for now),' dives head-on into the effects of a broken heart with seven beautiful, dreamy tracks. Lewis has big things in store for him, this is only the beginning!

2. Porteau, “River Song” - January 18th

There is something about this single that is so comforting, yet vulnerable at the same time. It's such a peaceful song considering its subject - not wanting to accept the realities of our life's seemingly inevitable cycle. "River Song" is from the upcoming album ‘Water’s Gate,' which is out on March 15th.

3. Tiger Mimic, ‘Elephant Skeleton’ - January 18th

When first listening to the EP 'Elephant Skeleton,' two words immediately came to my mind - catchy and fun. Starting with a debut EP like this, with five equally great songs, Tiger Mimic is bound to make some waves in the indie rock scene. What elevates their sound even more is how they have two vocalists whose voices blend together wonderfully.

4. OUTER, “Snowfox” - January 11th

This single, based on a book called '1984' by George Orwell, is from the Belgian band OUTER. "Snowfox" masks the song's subject of a dark, dystopian future with enchanting vocals and sound. Self-described by OUTER as "Sunday night music," their music is a perfect addition to any chill/study playlists.

5. Brandon Hoogenboom, ‘For Mabel’ - January 25th

This artist, Brandon Hoogenboom, has an interesting background: originally from the U.S., he spent some time living Australia while playing shows across the world as part of the band Set Sail. Now, he's back and living in Los Angeles while working on solo projects, like 'For Mabel.' This album will make you want to jump in the car and go on a long road-trip - at least that's what it did for me.

6. Fishing in Japan, “Only on the Weekends” - January 4th

Fishing in Japan has been one of my favorite bands for the past couple months because they are equal parts pop and chill, which make for a great combo. You can have fun dancing and singing along with the catchy lyrics, or you can put their songs on in the background when you need to do work. With already quite a few songs out, their newest single "Only on the Weekends" is a perfect example of what makes their music great.

7. Anteros, "Drive On" - January 24th

After releasing three EPs and a handful of singles over the past few years, Anteros is releasing a full length album in March titled 'When We Land.' The single "Drive On" from the upcoming album is the fourth song to be released from it and has me itching for March to get here already. They have a distinct pop sound that captivates listeners and really just makes them want to have fun.

8. JAWS, "Do You Remember?" - January 30th

JAWS is an indie rock band from Birmingham, England who is releasing an album called 'The Ceiling' at the beginning of April. While listening to the single "Do You Remember?" all I could think about was what their live shows must be like. If you like rock, you are going to love this band.
