Bring Your Old Band Tees Back to Life

Save your most beloved tees you just can’t let go of quite yet from the donation bin by turning them into something brand new.

If you’re like me, you probably tend to buy more band merch than there are opportunities to wear them, and there are so many days in a row I can wear band t-shirts to class. If so, chances are your dresser may look a little like mine - bursting at the seams, filled with too many long-forgotten tees.

If that’s the case, then it may be time to mix things up and get a little creative! Here are some ideas, which can be done without breaking the bank (so you have more money to spend at your next show!)

Restyle it

In one way or another, band tees are pretty much always in style. Sometimes, just a few changes can make a shirt you’ve had for years feel brand new.

I’ll admit, I have a problem with cropping my t-shirts. There’s just something I love about a simple crop top. And lucky for me, this style has been coming back in style for a while now and are super cute! If you can’t bring yourself to chop up your shirts, tying them can be a simple change.

If you’re looking to get a little more creative with how exactly you’re cutting up your shirt, here are a few more ideas to get your creative juices flowing!

If chopping up shirts isn’t your thing, you could dye your shirt. There are so many different options for dyeing your shirts, all of which are super cute.

Accessorize with It

If a shirt needs a little more than a crop or a quick dye, but you still want to wear it and represent your favorite bands with pride, it may be time to accessorize with it! While these take a little more work, the payoff is worth it.

One of my favorite DIYs I’ve come across is one which takes the design of the shirt and makes it into a panel on the back of a denim jacket. This update to a wardrobe staple is perfect for those chilly summer nights! This one may be a little tricky, so you may want to look at instructions for this here.

If denim jackets aren’t your style, this DIY to make multiple shirts into an infinity scarf may be more up your alley. This option is great if you have a lot of shirts you want to get rid of, so you can mix and match patterns and designs!

Decorate Your Space

While getting creative with your t-shirts by cutting and dyeing is exciting, sometimes you just can’t come to terms with altering them. If so, you could refresh your space and turn them into art!

One easy way to do this is to just paste them down over a canvas. This piece of art brings to your space an element of texture and personality.

If you are looking for a more refined look, framing them is another great option. With this, you can even include tickets and other memorabilia in the frame alongside your shirt.

Cozy Up With Your Favorite Bands

This last idea is a bit more pricey than the others, but if you’re able and willing to save up for it, you could turn your shirts into a blanket! This way you can decorate with your shirts in a way where you can still use them. I recently did this with a bunch of my old t-shirts from high school, and love that I was able to give these shirts a new life, rather than having them gather dust in the back of my closet.

For this option, you could send in your shirts to companies who will do it for you, but this can cost you a pretty penny. If you’re up for it, though, doing it yourself isn’t too difficult and costs only as much as the felt underside and the tools needed! Just be ready to invest some time - but with summer break just around the corner, this could be a fun activity for you and your friends to take on!

I hope some of these tips have inspired you to start a project or two, so you can bring new life to your tees. If you do any of these, we would love to hear from you and see what you made!

Happy crafting!
