EP Premiere of "Ruff Thymes" by Ruff Wizard
Ruff Wizard is an emerging project from four Dallas, TX based musicians, Chris Escarfullery, Levi Weiss, and Christian Blevins Stephen Goodson. Since they teamed up in 2018, they’ve been working on their debut EP ‘Ruff Thymes’ and playing gigs all over Texas. This EP was preceded by their first single “To My Love” from March of this year.
In listing the influences on the new EP, they’ve included Rex Orange County, Steely Dan, Jay Som, and “yacht rock.” They have previously noted their obsession with “yacht rock” - imagine the smooth, melodic soft rock that would pair well with a leisurely afternoon out sailing, such as the Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald, and Christopher Cross. This obsession, along with the synth-infused sounds of the 70s and 80s, certainly has had an influence while curating a tone for this EP.
‘Ruff Thymes’ opens with melodic “Until Then,” which immediately pulls listeners in with its masterful composition and lyricism. Next is the lead single “To My Love,”and then comes “The Bug,” which feels as though it could have been pulled straight out of a club in the 70s and 80s with its pounding beat and wailing synth - all in the absolute best way possible.
“Torches” follows, featuring airy and upbeat synths paired with the smooth guitar features, which washes over listeners and instills a feeling that makes you just want to tap your toes along to the beat, “smiling without a care,” despite the song taking listeners through the end of a relationship. The EP closes with full force with “Every Night,” a surprisingly upbeat ode to the nightly fight against anxieties and the pressures of life.
The EP was created with the help of Grammy-winning drummer Jordan Richardson of Son of Stan and Ben Harper’s Relentless7. With this level of collaboration behind a release so early in a bands existence, paired with an already well-established sound and the amazing talent of the four ‘Ruff Bois,’ who knows where they will go from here, the sky's the limit.
You can check out the EP a week early here, and pre-save it on Spotify, Apple Music, and wherever else you listen to your music here. Also, if you are in the Dallas, TX area, there is a EP Release Party happening on the 14th! You can find more information on that here.
